It all began with one injured redtailed hawk in 1972.  The successful recovery and eventual release of the bird inspired the partnership of Dr. Barbara Sawyer, veterinarian, and Ms. Deborah Soars.   After several years Ms. Soars moved out of state and in 1982 Dr. Sawyer died in a car accident, but the Center continued to grow.  Today the San Joaquin Raptor & Wildlife Rescue Center has expanded to include all wildlife.  We operate in Merced, Stanislaus, Tuolumne and Mariposa Counties.
Most wildlife comes from private citizens who call when they discover injured or orphaned creatures.  Some are delivered by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Agents or California Department of Fish and Game Wardens.  Others coem from Animal Control, veterinarians and other wildlife organizations.
The Center functions through a telephone network of volunteers, who care for injured wildlife in their home, and veterinarians, who generously donate their services.  Individual members do many different things.  Some maintain large filght aviaries.  Others rescue and treat injured wildlife and still others coordinate the network and keep records.  Almost everyone raises orphaned creatures and does fundraising.  Many members take a less active role prefering to just make that all important financial contribution of annual dues.  All members, who handle wildlife, participate in ongoing training programs.
The San Joaquin Raptor Rescue Center was incorporated in 1980, as a tax-exempt California Corporation.  The Center is governed by a board of directors, accepts patron memberships, has a volunteer training program, a quarterly newsletter and monthly meetings.  Slide presentations are available to schools, service organizations, wildlife groups and professional associations.  The San Joaquin Raptor/Wildlife Rescue Center is a fully licensed wildlife rehabilitation facility.
