The real enemy R us

Recent reports from Washington DC show beyond reasonable doubt that the Trump Administration regards California, not Russia, as the real enemy of His America. California, after all, has a bigger economy than poor old Russia with all those Great Power pretentions. In the view of California, home of Silicon Valley, Stanford, the University of California and nearly 40 million sun bathers, Russia should go back to playing mini-empire games with Turkey, the former Ottoman Empire.

Rural crime goes on

In times like these, when we are in uncharted waters of corruption at the highest levels of government, news of a little old-fashioned rustling is kind of reassuring if the culprits are caught. -- blj

Trump attacks West Coast by air, by land, and by sea

By air, land and sea, the Trump administration has attacked the West Coast, California particularly, and we are fighting back. It is a race to see whether the corrupt officials at the top will fall before all their plans for trashing the West Coast environment are in full operation.
This is going to be the defense of all the major environmental laws, both federal and state, that continue to be popular with the public although hated by politicians in the pockets of special interests.-- blj

"High Noon" again?

By Friday, I had had enough of the "news." It seemed to have degenerated into nothing but lies, reports of lies, threats, reports of threats, of course the Great Big Mueller Investigation, the Porn Star, the Wall, more Russia bashing (one RT pundit quipped, "The Americans didn't like us when we were a monarchy; they didn't like the Bolsheviks; and they don't like us now that we are capitalists..."); and the corrupt practices of the impish mouthpiece for oil and gas who is perverting the entire Environmental Protection Agency.

The shadow of sewer debt hangs over Atwater

It's hardly news to people who pay attention to public affairs in Merced County. Nonetheless, the sheer stamina of the discontent of the citizens of Atwater and their council is remarkable, appalling, or remarkably appalling, depending on your point of view. Outsiders exposed to Atwater discontent just hope it won't spread and meanwhile imagine reasons for why the citizens of Atwater are the way they are.

Trump's "apocalyptic tweets" meet sober reports from the Mideast

Trump's 'mission accomplished' tweet may come back to haunt him as another battle looms around Damascus
As Syrian troops move to another confrontation around the Syrian capital, what will the US president – and the British and French – do if more images of gassed civilians dying in agony appear?

“Let’s be crystal clear on the scope of this mission,” Brown wrote in a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Wednesday. “This will not be a mission to build a new wall. It will not be a mission to round up women and children or detain people escaping violence and seeking a better life. And the California National Guard will not be enforcing federal immigration laws.” -- Tolan, Murphy, Sanchez, Mercury News, April 12, 2018

West Side Stud -- higher stakes, fewer players, longer reach

In a congressional hearing last month, Zinke assured Rep. Jared Huffman, D-San Rafael, who opposes the project, that none of the $20 million Congress approved will be spent buying the property from Westlands.
Westlands isn’t the only district that would welcome the Shasta expansion. The San Luis and Delta Mendota Water Authority, which supplies water to Santa Clara County, told federal officials that it wanted to share the cost of raising Shasta dam. Doing so would provide a critical state partner for the project. -- Lochhead, SF Chronicle, April 15, 2018

Gangle's Angles Item #27: White House-doctor report

For your entertainment only
DC Gangle's intrepid White House correspondent, Missy Throckmorton (BA Stanford, 2016), reported a West Wing leak just moments ago and tweeted to our news desk:

Trump plans to fire Dr. Ronny Jackson as White House doctor, pardon Bill Cosby, and hire gynecologist Dr. Heathcliff "Cliff" Huxtable  to be the new Physician to the President. -- Missy T.

Well, you just take that, New Orleans!

If the greatest flood ever recorded in California happened in 1862, wouldn't it be hard to blame another of its size on the global warming now occurring? The damage such a flood would cause, quite aside from its cause, would be the result of the state's contemporary population, 39.5 million, compared with the half million in the state in 1862. And these aren't 39.5 million sitting ducks. They don't fly and don't float. But, according to our business and political leaders, they and their new neighbors, just about to arrive, are the life blood of the California economy.

Just say NO to Duarte Nursery

Three scofflaws and a sheriff rounded up 50 head of landowning cattle in Modesto last week and drove them back down a canyon all the way to the 18th century.
John Duarte,Jr.,  facing nearly $50 million in fines for deep-ripping vernal pools, settled out of court for $1 million.
